Some things take time and we need to manage expectations so we don’t perceive progress as evading us.
Redistricting: Howard County is the fastest growing school system
in Maryland at a pace of 1000 or more students a year. Currently, we have
an $816 million budget and 56,000 students. We are projected to have
60,000 students in the next few years. We need to have a large scale
comprehensive plan that is both reactive and proactive in our response
to our exploding student population. At this current rate of
increasing population, we will need to redistrict again in 5 years.
The achievement gap has lasting consequences. Howard County has room to improve our response so we don’t lose kids based on an insufficient plan.
There are many programs within our schools set to expire or lose funding. We need to be sure the programs that are valuable continue.
I would like to see students have a language option by 3rd grade.
We need to increase both the special needs and the underserved children’s funding and staffing to provide them with the support they need.
We can work to improve our teacher and administration relationship.
We need complete transparency from our school system.
We need to be purposeful and contemplative when approving development.
Our schools are bursting at the seams and we cannot accommodate nor serve our students wholly at this level.
We cannot afford to overburden our service agencies.
Let’s continue to be a business friendly county.
Quality of Life
Keeping Howard County as free as possible from violent crime, drugs, and human trafficking.
Maintain our efforts to prosecute even low level crimes so as to sustain our valued quality of life.
Continue to support our outstanding public services, which will constantly be evolving in order to meet the needs of our existing and increasing population.
Our budget is an invaluable tool that helps us to prioritize our spending and manage our money in an intentional manner.
Budget in ways that keep Howard County thriving, enhancing and improving.
